Rhiannon Giddens was the guest on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross today. She discusses, among many other things, her new album, Freedom Highway, and performs "At the Purchaser's Option" and "Julie," two of nine original songs she wrote or co-wrote for the album, which also includes a traditional tune and two civil rights–era songs. Giddens co-produced the album with multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell in his Louisiana studio, with the bulk of recording done in wooden rooms built prior to the Civil War, over an intense eight-day period. You can hear the episode below.
Freedom Highway, which has just been nominated for Best Album at the Americana Honors & Awards, is available on iTunes, Amazon, and in the Nonesuch Store and can be heard on Spotify and Apple Music.
Rhiannon Giddens concludes the current leg of her US tour with a performance at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City, the culminating concert in the esteemed American Songbook series’ season, this Saturday, and a concert at World Café Live Downstairs in Philadelphia on Sunday. The tour resumes in June and continues through the summer, with headlining shows and festival sets across the South and Midwest. Details at nonesuch.com/on-tour.
