Portuguese fado singer Carminho and her band stopped by the NPR offices in Washington, DC, while on tour to perform a Tiny Desk Concert for the NPR and NPR Music staff. "The world of Portuguese fado is full of emotion that is on display within seconds of this performance by vocalist Carminho," says NPR's Felix Contreras. The set includes two songs from her latest album, Portuguesa ("O Quarto (fado Pagem)" and "Marcha de Alcântara de 1969"), two from her new EP, Carmimho at Electrical Audio ("Os Argonautas" and "Deixei a minha casa"), and one from her 2019 album, Maria ("Estrela"). You can watch it here:
Carminho's self-produced album Portuguesa, the sixth album of her career, features fourteen compositions: several of her own songs as well as those of other writers, including traditional fado songs, through which she explores various combinations within the canons, reimagining the form. You can hear it and get it here. The EP Carminho at Electrical Audio was recorded in collaboration with the late Steve Albini at his iconic Electrical Audio studio in Chicago in October 2023. “Anyone who worked with Steve Albini knows of his humble authenticity and dedication towards perfecting raw sound," Carminho says. "He made the recordings sound as if we were performing in a fado house in Lisbon." You can hear it and get it here. Carminho considers Maria a dialogue between herself and two fado singers who blazed a trail for her: Beatriz da Conceição and Teresa Siqueira (her mother). You can hear it and get it here.
