Punch Brothers hit the road again, kicking off a two-week tour of the United States at the Charleston Music Hall in South Carolina this Friday, a double bill with Dave Rawlings Machine. The tour will take the band across the South, including a set at the New Orleans Jazz Festival this weekend and stops in Nashville, Birmingham, and Athens, and two nights in North Carolina, before heading north to Philadelphia and Cambridge, and then to the Midwest for a night in Milwaukee and two in Chicago. Gabriel Kahane returns to open most of the shows along the way.

The band regroups in the summer for several festival dates, including a return to Telluride Bluegrass Festival and two shows at the Chris Thile–curated American Acoustic festival at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The group plays a three-night residency at Blue Note Tokyo and a full five-city tour of Australia in August.

"With enthusiasm and experimentation, Punch Brothers take bluegrass to its next evolutionary stage," says the Washington Post, "drawing equal inspiration from the brain and the heart. The word 'eclectic' only scratches the surface when describing the quintet's deep well of influences, which include roots rock, jazz and even classical."

To pick up a copy of Punch Brothers' latest album, The Phosphorescent Blues, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store, where you can also pick up a copy of the follow-up EP, The Wireless.

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”

Composer Steve Reich talks about creating his 1970–71 piece Drumming—which the Village Voice hailed as “the most important work of the whole minimalist music movement"—in a new video from his publisher Boosey & Hawkes. Steve Reich and Musicians gave the world premiere performance of Drumming at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in December 1971. Their 1987 Nonesuch recording is included in the forthcoming Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven disc box set, due March 14.
