The Low Anthem's headlining tour of the US is in full swing again following a marathon five-concert run at SXSW in Austin last week. Following tonight's show at Plush in Tucson, the band performs all along the West Coast, with Timber Timbre opening, starting at the famed Largo at the Coronet Theater in Los Angeles tomorrow night.

Today is release day for The Low Anthem's special limited-edition vinyl 7-inch of its single "Charlie Darwin," featuring new and unreleased material. The single's A-side includes "Charlie Darwin," off the band's Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, and the B-side includes two staples from the band's live show, the previously unreleased "Sally Where'd You Get Your Liquor From" (originally by Rev. Gary Davis) and "Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around" (originally by Blind Willie McTell), a bonus track previously only available on iTunes. The "Darwin" 7-inch package references the band's initial hand-painted and silkscreened self-release of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. Pick up a copy now in the Nonesuch Store.

In advance of The Low Anthem's Los Angeles shows, the LAist reports from SXSW and the Paste party set from these "stunning multi-instrumentalists." The site says of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin that it "spans the gamut of everything you'd want in Americana inspired music. It's got heartbreaking harmonies, raw instrumentals, and lyrics that tell great stories of being far from home, having problems with drinking, and wild women."

---

The San Jose Mercury News previews this Friday's show at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall in its report from SXSW. Writer Mike Mayer says the band was his "most anticipated band to see" at the festival, describing their music as "an almost uncategorizable mix of traditional American folk music and hymn-like spirituals ... hauntingly beautiful and intricately arranged."

The band did not disappoint at their David's Sanctuary performance, it seems, where the audience "sat rapt through the 75-minute set," says Mayer, "breathing almost in rhythm with the band as it played much of its 2009 Oh My God, Charlie Darwin album." Read more at mercurynews.com.

Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s album honey from a winter stone, which he calls a “self-portrait,” is out now. It features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. “For arguably the most technically gifted trumpeter of his generation, a lot of Ambrose Akinmusire’s breakthroughs actually come from letting go of standards and structures," says the New York Times. "Lately Akinmusire has been making some of the most intimate, spellbinding music of his career.”

David Longstreth’s Song of the Earth, a song cycle for orchestra and voices, is due April 4. Performed by Longstreth with his band Dirty Projectors—Felicia Douglass, Maia Friedman, Olga Bell—and the Berlin-based chamber orchestra s t a r g a z e, conducted by André de Ridder, the album also features Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), Steve Lacy, Patrick Shiroishi, Anastasia Coope, Tim Bernardes, Ayoni, Portraits of Tracy, and the author David Wallace-Wells. Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth—his biggest-yet foray into the field of concert music—"is not a ‘climate change opera,’” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humor, rage.”
