Pat Metheny's latest Nonesuch album, What's It All About, is due out this Tuesday. Earlier this week in the Nonesuch Journal, we posted a video of Metheny introducing the album by performing portions of a few tracks and discussing the album's inspiration. Today, we offer the first in a series of videos to be released in the coming days of Metheny performing full-length version of songs on the new record. Today's video, posted below: "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," by Carly Simon & Jacob Brackman.

“To me, there were always several interesting things about this piece," Metheny says of Carly Simon's first major hit, "not the least of which is the way that she moves from root minor key to the major key just a half step above it so effortlessly in a way that is almost invisible. But also, I always just thought it was a great melody, with that big leap at the end of the first phrase. And form wise, the way it goes through this whole thing and then starts back up again to make the same build again. My take on it harmonically colors in some of what I always thought was implied in there.”

Watch the performance here and at nonesuch.com/media:

After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, What's It All About is the first Pat Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented. This is a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach.

Check back with the Nonesuch Journal on Monday and Tuesday for more videos in the series.
