Carolina Chocolate Drops performed a new take of their song "Country Girl" for MTV Hive's Stop/Watch, in which artists are challenged to complete a song in 60 seconds. On this take, the band's "country shuffle has a sharper twang and a steel-soul," says MTV, "with singer Rhiannon Giddens showing new dimensions of her voice as she roars through the first verse of the original." Watch it here. Carolina Chocolate Drops are in for two days of music-making at the Winnipeg Folk Festival this weekend.

Carolina Chocolate Drops—whose North American tour brought them to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on Friday and the ROMP: Bluegrass Roots & Branches festival in Owensboro, Kentucky, on Saturday—recently performed for a new segment on MTV Hive called Stop/Watch (which label mates Punch Brothers helped inaugurate last week), in which artists are challenged to complete a song in 60 seconds. The band offered a new take on their song "Country Girl," a tune off their latest Nonesuch Records release, Leaving Eden.

"The video for Carolina Chocolate Drops’ rural celebration 'Country Girl' has a barn dance and a full buffet of Southern dishes, but the song’s homespun charm resonates even louder" here, says MTV. "Their curtailed country shuffle has a sharper twang and a steel-soul with singer Rhiannon Giddens showing new dimensions of her voice as she roars through the first verse of the original."

Watch the performance below.

Up next for the Carolina Chocolate Drops is a full two days of music-making at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in Winnipeg's Birds Hill Provincial Park this coming weekend, on Saturday, July 7, and Sunday, July 8. The band performs a main-stage set Saturday evening, preceded and followed by curated and hosted sets on the festival's other stages both days. Also performing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival this year is Billy Bragg, whose current North American tour features songs from Mermaid Avenue with lyrics by Woody Guthrie. "Here you have the guy who is speaking to the universality of the human experience in every molecule," Ken Burns tells Walter Isaacson on PBS's Amanpour & Co. about the subject of his latest film, Leonardo da Vinci. Sarah Burns, his co-director on the film with David McMahon, adds: "I think it's entirely central to who Leonardo was, that he had these interests across such a wide spectrum, and he didn't see those things as being separate. To him, all of these things were related and part of his larger effort to just understand the universe and everything he could about the human experience, the human body, and how all of these things are connected." You can watch their conversation here. You can watch LEONARDO da VINCI on PBS and hear Caroline Shaw's original score now.
