As announced last week, Nonesuch Records will release Junun, an album from composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and the Rajasthan Express, a group of Indian qawwali musicians, in November. Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson documented the recording sessions inside the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India. You can watch a clip from the film featuring the album track "Roked" here; the track is available to download now with album preorders. "Suddenly," The New Yorker writes in an article on Junun, "a person knows what it feels like to occupy a moment completely."
As announced last week, Nonesuch Records will release Junun, an album from composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and the Rajasthan Express, a group of Indian qawwali musicians, on November 13, 2015. Recorded earlier this year in a makeshift studio inside the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India, the album was made with Radiohead's producer Nigel Godrich, who worked with the ensemble to create this two LP/CD album. The album features Ben Tzur's compositions, which combine ecstatic, devotional Sufi qawwal musical traditions and his native Hebrew. Pre-orders of Junun on iTunes and on CD and vinyl in the Nonesuch Store include an instant download of the album track "Roked;" a film clip featuring "Roked" premiered at Pitchfork and can now be viewed below.
The clip comes from the film Junun by filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, a friend and frequent collaborator of Greenwood who came along to document the recording sessions as well as daily life and the close camaraderie of artistic collaboration. The film debuted at the New York Film Festival last week and is currently streaming exclusively on MUBI. Junun also will be shown at the Rome Film Festival this coming weekend.
The film and album are featured in The New Yorker. "Suddenly," writes the magazine's Amanda Petrusich, "a person knows what it feels like to occupy a moment completely." Read the article at newyorker.com.
