Sara Watkins' video for the song "Take Up Your Spade," the closing track off her new album, Sun Midnight Sun, made its world premiere earlier today on the Los Angeles Times Pop & Hiss blog, which describes the song as "a gentle benedictory ode to the notion that every moment brings with it the possibility of renewal." The video was shot at the recording session for the new album by director Reid Long and features Jackson Browne and Fiona Apple, who contribute backing vocals on the song, and producer Blake Mills. Following the Pop & Hiss premiere, the video is now available on Watkins' YouTube channel and at nonesuch.com/media. Watch it below.

The second solo album from Watkins, Sun Midnight Sun includes songs written by Watkins, like "Take Up Your Spade," several collaborations with Mills, songs by Dan Wilson and Willie Nelson, and a duet with Fiona Apple on The Everly Brothers classic “You’re the One I Love.” USA Today calls the album "flawless" and "a gorgeous pop masterpiece ... pure musical pleasure." The Wrap says "it might be the finest album of the year."

Sara Watkins performed the first of several spring dates opening for Dawes at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York, Pennsylvania, last night. They perform at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, tonight, followed by festival sets at the Appel Farm Arts & Music Festival in Elmer, New Jersey, on Saturday, and at Mountain Jam in Hunter, New York, on Sunday. The Way Out of Easy, the first album from guitarist Jeff Parker and his long-running ETA IVtet—saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose—since their 2022 debut Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, which Pitchfork named one of the Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, is out now on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records. Like that album, The Way Out of Easy comprises recordings from LA venue ETA, where Parker and the ensemble held a weekly residency for seven years. During that time, the ETA IVtet evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form journeys into innovative, groove-oriented improvised music. All four tracks on The Way Out of Easy come from a single night in 2023, providing an unfiltered view of the ensemble, fully in their element.

The Staves' new EP Happy New Year, out today, includes three acoustic versions of tracks from their new album, All Now—"I Don't Say It, But I Feel It," "After School," and "All Now"—and a cover of The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home." Also out now: an acoustic performance video for "After School," which the duo calls "a love song to our sister Emily inspired by the bands we were listening to in the '90s. Putting on the rose-tinted glasses and embracing nostalgia."
