    Rhiannon Giddens has released a new song, "Black Is the Color," streaming now, and available as an instant download with pre-orders of her upcoming T Bone Burnett–produced debut album, Tomorrow Is My Turn. You can listen to the song, as well as other instant download tracks “Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind” and “Shake Sugaree,” here. Giddens appears and sings in a new Apple commercial, featuring her rendition of the Gershwin classic “Love Is Here to Stay.” The video finds a young girl discovering an old recording of her grandmother at a younger age (Giddens) singing, and then watches as the girl uses her iPad to reimagine the song in a modern context.     Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, Inherent Vice, is out now on CD and digitally, with the vinyl to follow March 3. An adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel, Inherent Vice, now playing in select theaters in NYC and LA, is set in the tail end of the psychedelic ’60s. The soundtrack features nine compositions by Greenwood, an unreleased Radiohead tune performed by members of Supergrass, plus other recordings from the movie’s era. The New York Times calls it an "excellent playlist." Additional performers include The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Neil Young, Can, and The Marketts, among others.

    Richard Linklater's film Boyhood has landed on a number of lists of Best Movies of 2014, including all three New York Times film critics: A.O. Scott—"In my 15 years of professional movie reviewing, I can’t think of any film that has affected me the way Boyhood did"—and Stephen Holden, who both place the film in the No. 1 spot on their lists, and Manohla Dargis, whose list is alphabetical. The film is also No. 1 on the year's best lists from New York magazine, Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and Indiewire.

    John Adams's album City Noir has made NPR's list of the Ten Best Classical Albums of 2014. "[T]here was such a bounty of phenomenal albums released this year that the selection process was a joy," writes NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas. She calls saxophonist Timothy McAllister "outstanding" and says "the performances by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, led by David Robertson, are invigorating and top-notch." The New York Times's Anthony Tommasini includes The Met's production of Adams's The Death of Klinghoffer among the Ten Best Classical Music Events of 2014, calling it "a searing yet ruminative work."

    Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, Inherent Vice, is due out this coming Monday on Nonesuch Records (with the vinyl to follow March 3). Before then, and before the film opens in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles this Friday, have a listen to the track "Spooks," an unreleased Radiohead-penned tune performed by Greenwood with Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey of Supergrass and a voiceover by Joanna Newsom. You can hear the track, which premiered on Stereogum, here.

    Boyhood has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture, Drama; Best Director and Best Screenplay for Richard Linklater; Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette; and Best Supporting Actor for Ethan Hawke. Joaquin Phoenix is up for Best Actor, Comedy or Musical, for Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, and Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye's song "Mercy Is," from Darren Aronofsky's Noah, is up for Best Original Song. All three films' soundtracks are on Nonesuch Records.

    Pianist Tigran Hamasyan's Nonesuch Records debut album, Mockroot, is due out February 17. But you don't need to wait till then to hear music from the new album: two songs, "Entertain Me" and "The Apple Orchard in Saghmosavanq," are now streaming here. The tracks are available to download with pre-orders of the album at iTunes and in the Nonesuch Store. Mockroot features Hamasyan on piano, voice, keyboards, synths and sound effects, Sam Minaie on electric bass, and Arthur Hnatek on drums and live electronics. The album comprises new tracks written by Hamasyan, as well as his arrangements of traditional Armenian songs.

    Boyhood has won the LA Film Critics Award for Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Linklater, Best Actress for Patricia Arquette, and Best Editing for Sandra Adair; Jonny Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice was named Best Music Score. Boston Society of Film Critics also named Boyhood Best Picture, Best Director for Linklater, Best Editor for Adair, and Best Ensemble Cast, and awarded Inherent Vice for Best Use of Music in a Film. The New York Film Critics Online named Boyhood Best Picture, Best Director for Linklater, and Best Supporting Actress for Arquette.
