Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman kick off a two-and-a-half-week tour of duo performances in Burlington, Vermont, tonight. At one recent duo date, "the twosome played with an unerring touch," says the Albany Times Union. All About Jazz insists that anyone with "the opportunity to see these two jazz masters should not pass it up." Mehldau spoke with PBS NewsHour about his new album, Highway Rider, which also features Redman.

The Joshua Redman Trio performs at the University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Center on Sunday. The trio appears on Compass, Redman's latest Nonesuch release, which the Washington Post says "easily ranks among his most rewarding." DCist says, "The music is challenging, but remains accessible even to the untrained ear." The Washington City Paper insists the trio has "one of the surest and most intoxicating sense of melody you’ve ever heard."

Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau will perform together at the official National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, DC, this evening starting at 5 PM EST, joining fellow performers Sheryl Crow, Common, Jordan Sparks, and Ray LaMontagne, as well as President Obama and his family. The whole ceremony will be streamed live online and will be broadcast on PBS stations across the country tomorrow night.

When Joshua Redman joined Brad Mehldau for a duo set at London's Wigmore Hall last month, the Guardian said that with "the eloquent saxophonist" Redman, "Mehldau was often able to let his partner's built-in swing release his most whimsical side." The two perform together again for a very festive occasion: the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, DC, on December 3, with a PBS broadcast the following night.

The New York Times says to expect "plenty of dynamism in the exchange" from the trio; the Village Voice says that "Redman's authoritative these days, and he's taught his team how to keep lots of balls in the air at once." The Guardian gives four stars to the saxophonist's recent concert with Brad Mehldau in London and the Mehldau Trio's own show there, citing the pianist's "remarkable contrapuntal improvising style and incisive musical intelligence."

The recording features both trio and double trio formats, creating tracks that are "harmonically rich, rhythmically vibrant and bristling with creative complexity," says All About Jazz. The set featured songs from Redman's latest Nonesuch release, Compass, review calls "another exquisite journey" from Redman.

When Joshua Redman's MoodSwing was originally released, back in 1994, it was Redman's first to feature both his own band—pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Brian Blade—and all original tunes. Now, as those collaborations continue to flourish, MoodSwing returns in a new Nonesuch vinyl reissue. "Redman finds ingenious ways of creating a mode of acoustic jazz that is both entertaining and enlightening," Entertainment Weekly wrote upon the album's initial release. "MoodSwing plays like an artistic journey."

Joshua Redman wraps up a three-day engagement at the Montreal International Jazz Festival tonight at the Théâtre Maisonneuve, featuring the band from his recent Nonesuch release, Compass. In anticipation of the performance, Redman was profiled in the Montreal Gazette, which describes Compass as "a refined experience," featuring "sound sculptures straddling the line between freedom and formalism."

Bay Area native Joshua Redman is back on his home turf this week to play a five-night residency—nine shows—at Yoshi's in Oakland, beginning tonight, with bassist Matt Penman, of the SFJAZZ Collective, and drummer Greg Hutchinson, a featured player on Redman's latest Nonesuch release, the double-trio album Compass. Branford Marsalis tells the San Jose Mercury News of the special affinity between Redman and his drummer, calling Hutchinson "the perfect foil for Josh."

Joshua Redman and one of two trios featured on his recent Nonesuch release, Compass, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Greg Hutchinson, played a three-night residency at Ronnie Scott's club in London through last weekend. The Guardian gives the sets four stars, describing Redman as "a compelling builder of extended stories, and his pacing is masterly." The Trio gave the audience, which "howled their appreciation," "a demonstration of peerless sax mastery and group empathy." The Financial Times gives four stars as well, asserting: "Redman’s trio deliver an intense and fiery chamber jazz ... The fractured breaks, snatches of improv and twists and turns seemed as spontaneous as the applause they immediately won."

Joshua Redman's new album, Compass, released last month, features pieces for trio, a format he had explored on his previous release, Back East, as well as the bold combination of all five members of its two separate trios into a double trio. In the March issue of JazzTimes magazine, writer Jeff Tamarkin talks to Redman about his taking "the trio concept to another place altogether," as he "ups the ante on the standard trio model" for Compass.
