Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's Einstein on the Beach, widely credited as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century, launched its creators to international success when it was first produced in Avignon, France, in 1976. Now, nearly four decades after it was first performed and 20 years since its last production, Einstein on the Beach returns to France with performances at the Opéra Berlioz / Le Corum in Montpellier this weekend, launching an international tour that will head to Italy, London, Toronto, Brooklyn, Berkeley, Mexico City, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong. There's much more to come this weekend with the Tune-In Music Festival's Celebrating the American Icon: Philip Glass at 75, a four-day event comprising five programs at NYC's Park Avenue Armory, featuring Glass’s own music, including his landmark piece Music in Twelve Parts, as well as music, poetry, and art created and performed by those who influenced him and those whom he has influenced throughout his career.

He previews the performance on WNYC's Soundcheck today at 2 PM ET. He was the subject of a feature profile on NPR's Morning Edition earlier today. "Composer Philip Glass changed the landscape of American music," says NPR. "Glass came up with a new way to make music, and with it, brought a new audience to the concert halls."

Robert Wilson and Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach returns for the first time in 20 years with the launch of a major international tour, starting with preview performances at the Power Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, this weekend. These mark the first North American presentations ever held outside of New York City. "It's only January, but the classical music event of the year is already upon us," exclaims the Detroit Free Press. "Glass and Wilson strip down the fundamentals of movement, image, text and music to essentials and then elevate their essence to operatic grandeur ... It's hard to overestimate the impact of Einstein on American music, art and culture."

To coincide with the tour and Glass’s 75th birthday, Nonesuch has reissued its seminal 1993 recording, which the Washington Post wrote is "more complete than the first recording and superior in both performance and sound."

New York's Lincoln Center presented two groundbreaking works by Philip Glass last week, when the New York Philharmonic and the Philip Glass Ensemble performed Koyaanisqatsi and the Metropolitan Opera gave the first of seven performances of the opera Satyagraha. The New York Times calls them "two of Mr. Glass’s most compelling scores." The New York Post calls Satyagraha "a masterpiece of musical and visual art." The AP calls it "spectacular," its music "frequently ravishing." Tuesday's performance includes a pre-concert talk by composer Nico Muhly and will be broadcast live on SIRIUS XM and the Met's website.

New York's Lincoln Center is the place to be to take in two groundbreaking works by composer Philip Glass this week: Koyaanisqatsi, performed by the New York Philharmonic and the Philip Glass Ensemble in Avery Fisher Hall, and the return of Satyagraha to the Metropolitan Opera in the first revival of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch’s 2008 production. The November 8 Satyagraha performance includes a pre-concert talk by Nico Muhly and will stream live online. On November 19, the opera will be transmitted worldwide as part of The Met: Live in HD series.

Composers Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, and Philip Glass, and Nonesuch Records President Robert Hurwitz have all contributed to the BBC Radio 3 documentary 50 Years of Minimalism in Music, which aired this past Saturday night. They and a number of other music pioneers spoke with American conductor Richard Bernas in this look back at five decades of Minimalism, "the musical language of our time." Earlier this month, The Kitchen, the NYC non-profit performance and visual arts space, celebrated its 40th anniversary by honoring Philip Glass in a gala benefit. The gala also included the premiere of a short film that looks back on the organization's history of supporting innovative artists and includes interviews with Glass, Laurie Anderson, Rhys Chatham, and others, along with photos, and audio and video footage of performances from throughout the Kitchen's 40 years, including early sets from Alarm Will Sound, Bill T. Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, John Zorn, and Lou Reed will be among the artists performing at the Concert for Japan, a 12-hour event on April 9 presented by NYC's Japan Society to benefit organizations that directly help people affected by the earthquake and tsunamis that struck Japan. Additional activities will be available for all ages, including making paper cranes and washi lanterns for good luck, basic Japanese language classes, and access to the exhibit Bye Bye Kitty!!!. All proceeds will go to Japan Society's Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.

The Barbican in London has announced its Classical Music 2011–12 season, which includes a Kronos Quartet residency with a program of American music and a special mediation on the anniversary of 9/11; two concerts from the LSO celebrating Steve Reich's 75th birthday; and the UK premiere of Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach in conjunction with the Cultural Olympiad's London 2012 Festival.

When the Philip Glass / Robert Wilson collaboration Einstein on the Beach premiered in 1976, it marked the international breakthrough for its creators and changed what audiences might expect from opera, theater, or performance art. New audiences and an entirely new generation will have the opportunity to see the rarely performed piece during a 2012-2013 international tour of major cities around the world. "For audiences, few of whom have experienced Einstein apart from audio recordings," says the composer, "this tour will be a chance finally to see this seminal work."
