In celebration of Nonesuch Records' 60th anniversary, the label has partnered with photographer Michael Wilson—who has exquisitely captured dozens of Nonesuch artists over the past quarter-century—to produce Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection, an extremely limited quantity of 100 box sets containing newly created prints from his Nonesuch archive, out now. You can take a quick look inside here. Designed by the Grammy-winning team at SMOG Design, each box comprises twenty 12" x 12" prints, numbered and signed by the photographer. Artists featured are Allen Toussaint, Ambrose Akinmusire, Audra McDonald, Bill Frisell, The Black Keys, Brad Mehldau, David Byrne, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris, Frederic Rzewski, Jeremy Denk, Kronos Quartet, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Manuel Galbán and Ry Cooder, Philip Glass, Randy Newman, Rhiannon Giddens, Stephin Merritt and Lemony Snicket, Steve Reich, and Timo Andres, who wrote a note for the box.

Composer/pianist Timo Andres has made his NPR Tiny Desk Concert debut with a performance of two Philip Glass Piano Etudes—Nos. 6 and 5—that premiered today, on Glass's eighty-seventh birthday. You can watch it here. Andres performs Glass's Evening Song No. 2 on the 2020 Nonesuch album I Still Play. Andres's new album, The Blind Banister, is due March 22.

Kronos Quartet’s acclaimed 1995 album Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass is now available on vinyl for the first time, to coincide with Kronos: Five Decades, a year-long celebration of the quartet’s 50th anniversary. The two-LP set, produced by the composer, Judith Sherman, and Kurt Munkacsi, features violinists David Harrington and John Sherba, violist Hank Dutt, and cellist Joan Jeanrenaud performing quartets No. 2 (Company) (1983), No. 3 (Mishima) (1985), No. 4 (Buczak) (1990), and No. 5 (1991), the first piece Glass wrote for Kronos. “It contains some of Glass's best music since Koyaanisqatsi,” said the New York Times. “His ear for sumptuous string sonorities is undeniable.” The Washington Post called it “an ideal combination of composer and performers.”

Nonesuch releases Philip Glass’s award-winning soundtrack to The Hours on vinyl for the first time today to coincide with its 20th anniversary and Glass’ 85th birthday concert season. Originally released in December 2002, Glass’s score to the Academy Award–winning film was itself nominated for an Academy Award, as well as a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and went on to win a BAFTA and a Classical BRIT. Based on Michael Cunningham’s 1999 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, the film was directed by Stephen Daldry with a screenplay by David Hare and stars Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. “Was there ever a more perfect film for Glass’s lyrical manner?” asked Gramophone. “Such a feeling of fragile beauty is a rare achievement.”

Yola, Rhiannon Giddens, and Laurie Anderson took part in Great Performances: Grammy Salute to Music Legends, an awards ceremony and tribute concert to present the Recording Academy's Special Merit Awards on PBS. Yola performs "Up Above My Head" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, to whom Rhiannon Giddens presents a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. Laurie Anderson performs "Gee-Whiz," her collaboration with Philip Glass, and presents him with the Trustees Award. You can watch it all here.

Timo Andres's performance of Philip Glass's Evening Song No. 2, from the forthcoming album, I Still Play, is now available. You can follow along in the score as Andres performs it in the new video here. Evening Song No. 2 is one of eleven new solo piano compositions by artists who have recorded for Nonesuch Records, written in honor of the label’s longtime President Bob Hurwitz as he became Chairman Emeritus in 2017, performed by Andres, Brad Mehldau, Randy Newman, and Jeremy Denk.

IndieWire has published its list of The 25 Best Movie Scores of the 21st Century, including five for which Nonesuch released the soundtrack: Philip Glass's score to Stephen Daldry's 2002 film The Hours; Clint Mansell's for Darren Aronofsky's 2006 film The Fountain, performed by Kronos Quartet and Mogwai; and three scores to Paul Thomas Anderson films—Jon Brion's for 2002's Punch-Drunk Love, and Jonny Greenwood's for 2007's There Will Be Blood and the just-released Phantom Thread. IndieWire says "the last 18 years have given us some of the most memorable music ever written for the movies."

Happy birthday in advance to composer Philip Glass, who turns 80 this coming Tuesday. Among the celebratory events around the world this concert season is a BBC Total Immersion Day, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from the Barbican in London this Saturday. NPR Music is marking Glass's milestone birthday with personal reflections from artists who have collaborated with the composer, including Laurie Anderson and Nico Muhly.

Congratulations to Audra McDonald and Philip Glass, who are among this year's National Medal of Arts recipients. President Barack Obama will present the awards in a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, September 22, 2016. "The National Medal of Arts recipients have helped to define our nation's cultural legacy through the artistic excellence of their creative traditions," says NEA Chairman Jane Chu, "and I join the President in congratulating and thanking them for their contributions."
