Nonesuch Records releases the first recordings of Steve Reich’s Runner (2016) and Music for Ensemble and Orchestra (2018), performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conducted by Susanna Mälkki, available digitally and on CD on September 30, 2022; a vinyl LP version will be released on December 2. The New York Times calls Runner “a calmly luminous orchestral piece with the pulsating, propulsive rhythms that animate much of Mr. Reich’s music.” The San Francisco Chronicle says that Music for Ensemble and Orchestra “is a beautiful and dramatically charged masterpiece, but its impact goes even further than that.” The album track Runner: I. Composer Steve Reich is on the Song Exploder podcast to talk with host Hrishikesh Hirway about the first movement of his groundbreaking 1988 piece Different Trains and the childhood experiences that inspired it. The New York Times declared the piece, which Kronos Quartet performed on the Grammy Award–winning first recording, “a work of such originality that ‘breakthrough’ seems the only possible description.” You can hear what he had to say here.

Steve Reich will publish Conversations, a new book, via HarperCollins' Hanover Square Press, on March 8, 2022. In the book, the composer speaks with collaborators, fellow composers, musicians, and visual artists influenced by his work—including Nonesuch Records Chairman Emeritus Robert Hurwitz, Jonny Greenwood, Kronos Quartet's David Harrington, Stephen Sondheim, Nico Muhly, Brian Eno, Michael Gordon, and others—to reflect on his prolific career as a composer as well as the music that inspired him and that has been inspired by him. The New York Times calls it "a surprising, enlightening series of conversations that shed new light on the music and career of 'our greatest living composer.'" The New Yorker says: "Through this series of insightful, wide-ranging conversations starting from his student days to the present pandemic, we gain a compelling glimpse into the mind of 'the most original musical thinker of our time.'"

Steve Reich's seminal 1974–76 work Music for 18 Musicians—the Nonesuch recording of which, performed by Steve Reich and Musicians, won a Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance—is among ten compositions chosen to inspire visual artists to create their own works for the inaugural Concord Art Prize. The prize, created by Concord Music Publishing, is open to all UK artists, with a prize of £10,000. "Over the years I have heard from several artists, including Gerhard Richter, saying they have used 18 Musicians while painting, sculpting or working with media," Reich says. "I am very excited to see what it may inspire."

They discuss his early taped pieces, composed works for performance, and pieces that incorporate the two; the context of the artistic community in which he was writing; and his influence on succeeding generations of artists. Reich Richter Pärt, a live performance-exhibition pairing works by Gerhard Richter with a new composition for large ensemble by Steve Reich and extant work by Arvo Pärt, debuts at The Shed in NYC this Saturday, April 6, for the new venue's Opening Weekend. The Reich/Richter collaboration examines the intersection between Richter's formula for his "Patterns" series and Reich's repeating musical structures in a genre-crossing moving picture work made with filmmaker Corinna Belz. Ensemble Signal and the International Contemporary Ensemble, in alternation, give live performances of Reich/Richter through June 2.
