Steve Reich will work with filmmaker Bill Morrison to create a film accompaniment to the composer's piece Different Trains, for the first time in the work's history. The commission, presented by Metal, will feature archival film stock of train travel during WWII gathered from archives in continental Europe and the US. Reich, Sound Intermedia, and the London Contemporary Orchestra will collaborate to perform this presentation in an open-air concert at Liverpool's Edge Hill Station—the departure point for the first-ever intercity passenger train travel, in 1830—on September 29, 2016. Steve Reich has been awarded the Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition from the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. Established in 2004, the Nemmers Prize honors classical music composers of outstanding achievement who have significantly influenced the field of composition. "It is particularly gratifying to be honored in this way by a school of music, which demonstrates such passionate commitment to the study, composition, and performance of new music," says Reich. "I look forward to my two residencies at Northwestern for concerts of my music in 2017."

Steve Reich and Stephen Sondheim, as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, took part in an evening of conversation, moderated by WNYC's John Schaefer, on January 31, 2015. This special occasion marked the first the time the two appeared together on stage. Carnegie Hall has announced that Steve Reich will hold the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair for the 2016–2017 season. His residency includes an all-Reich 80th birthday celebration, a Kronos Quartet concert, a performance of his Tehillim, and Three Generations, a multi-event, Reich-curated exploration of the changing direction of concert music from the mid-20th century to the present, including works by and discussions with Reich, John Adams, Nico Muhly, and more. The Barbican Centre in London has announced a year-long festival to celebrate the music of composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass, as they turn 80, and John Adams, as he turns 70, during its 2016–17 season. The series, Reich, Glass, Adams: the Sounds that Changed America, begins with a weekend of Reich's music on November 5, 2016; Adams is celebrated in a series of concerts of some of his major works from December 2016 to April 2017, featuring the composer also as a conductor; and Glass is celebrated January 27–29, 2017. Tickets go on sale online to Barbican Members Plus starting Monday, February 1 and the general public on February 10. 

Steve Reich's Clapping Music is now an app. Developed by the London Sinfonietta, Queen Mary University of London, and Touchpress, Steve Reich’s Clapping Music offers an interactive experience in learning and understanding rhythmic patterns through Reich’s seminal work. In the new app, users learn to play the iconic piece, in which two performers clap a single but constantly shifting pattern for the entirety of the work. For those who perfect their Clapping Music skills, there is the opportunity to pit themselves against London Sinfonietta percussionists in competitions to perform live with the ensemble.

When Record Store Day took place earlier this month, included among the special releases were limited-edition vinyl from two Nonesuch artists: Robert Plant's 10" vinyl EP More Roar, with three tracks from his 2014 lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar world tour, and Steve Reich's Grammy Award-winning Music for 18 Musicians re-issued on two 180-gram vinyl LPs. Steve Reich is the subject of a feature-length special on BBC Radio 6 Music's The Tom Robinson Show, for which the composer spoke about his career and his latest work, Radio Rewrite. "His work with repetitive patterns and rhythms has been hugely influential across mainstream as well as experimental music," says the show. NPR Music looks back on the 50th anniversary of one groundbreaking piece: "It's Gonna Rain is just one example of Reich's broad musical lexicon that over five decades has influenced countless musicians in classical, electronic and even popular music."

Today marks the release of composer Steve Reich’s album Radio Rewrite on Nonesuch Records (October 6 in the UK). The album features the first recording of the 2012 title piece, which references two songs by Radiohead and is performed by Alarm Will Sound led by Alan Pierson; Electric Counterpoint (1987), performed by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood; and Piano Counterpoint, a 2011 transcription by Vincent Corver of Reich’s 1973 Six Pianos, performed by pianist Vicky Chow.
