Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians will receive its first Scottish performance in a decade when conductor Thomas Adès leads the London Sinfonietta and Synergy Vocals in a performance of the piece at Glasgow's City Halls on Sunday. Reich spoke with BBC Radio 3's Robert Worby about his music and the inspiration behind the piece for a short film by the London Sinfonietta. Watch it here.

The Konserthuset in Stockholm kicks off Steve Reich's 75th birthday year with Tonsättarfestivalen: Steve Reich, five days of concerts, starting tonight, featuring the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic, Kroumata, Amadinda, Synergy Vocals, and the composer himself, who performs Clapping Music on tonight's program. The concerts will be broadcast on Swedish Radio P2. This week's festival is the first of a year's worth of events around the world honoring the composer's 75th birthday on October 3.

The Barbican in London has announced its Classical Music 2011–12 season, which includes a Kronos Quartet residency with a program of American music and a special mediation on the anniversary of 9/11; two concerts from the LSO celebrating Steve Reich's 75th birthday; and the UK premiere of Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach in conjunction with the Cultural Olympiad's London 2012 Festival.

Steve Reich's 2x5 and the Nonesuch Records / Indaba Music contest to remix the piece were featured on the BBC World Service's The Strand. The composer and Dominique Leone, the creator of the winning remix, talk about the contest, the classical roots of remixing, and why 2x5 lent itself to the process. "Steve Reich's music is so based in rhythm," says Leone, "so when you can take little chunks of it and manipulate that and exploit the rhythm that's already there, it's not very difficult to make something that sounds good." In October, Steve Reich, Nonesuch Records, and Indaba Music launched a search for collaborators to remix the third movement of the composer's piece 2x5, which Nonesuch had recently released on the same album as his Pulitzer Prize–winning piece Double Sextet. Reich has now chosen a Grand Prize Winner and two Runners-Up, and fans have chosen 10 Honorable Mentions, all of which can be heard here.

Steve Reich's latest album, which pairs eighth blackbird's performance of the composer's Pulitzer Prize–winning piece Double Sextet with Bang on a Can's performance of 2x5, has now been named among the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2010 by NPR. "Steve Reich may be labeled a 'minimalist' composer," says NPR, "but the works on this recording are far more 'maximal' than simple repeating chords and mutating melodies."

Celebrations of Steve Reich's 75th year in 2011 continue to mount, with Sweden's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra kicking things off in January with Tonsättarfestivalen: Steve Reich, a five-day festival of Reich's music in Stockholm, and the Sónar festival's just-announced all-Reich Opening Night concert in Barcelona in June. Already on tap are musical celebrations at Carnegie Hall, the Barbican, the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków, Cité de la Musique, and more.

Following the Barbican and Carnegie Hall celebrations of Steve Reich's latest works early next year, some of his most iconic works will be featured in the weeklong Sacrum Profanum festival taking place in Kraków, Poland, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In an introductory video seen here, Reich describes Sacrum Profanum as "one of the best new-music festivals in the world." Among the festival performers are Jonny Greenwood, Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, and Bang on a Can.

The Barbican in London has revealed the complete program for Reverberations: The Influence of Steve Reich, a two-day celebration of his music and his influence on generations of musicians, May 7 and 8. Highlights include performances of all the new music he has written since the Barbican celebrated his 70th birthday in October 2006, including Double Sextet, 2x5, and WTC 9/11, performed by Kronos Quartet. Carnegie Hall presents those works in Music of Steve Reich at the end of April.

Steve Reich's 2x5 receives its US premiere at Strathmore Hall outside of Washington, DC, tonight. The piece will be performed as part of an all-Reich program by the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Bang on a Can gave 2x5 its world premiere in Manchester, England, last summer and can be heard on the first recording of the piece, released this past September with Reich's Double Sextet, which is also on tonight's program. Voting has begun at Indaba Music to pick the Top ten 2x5 remixes.

There's just one more day to submit your remix of the third movement of Steve Reich's 2x5. Final submissions are due at Indaba Music by 5 PM ET on Tuesday. Once all the submissions are in, it's time to start voting. From November 9 to 23, fans and a panel of judges, including Reich, will review the submissions. Indaba will announce the jury’s choices of Grand Prize Winner and two Runners-Up on December 7, as well as the public’s choice of 10 Honorable Mentions.

Steve Reich is Composer of the Week this week at BBC Radio 3. Tune in all week to hear interviews with and music by Reich, including the British radio premiere of his 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet. The Detroit Free Press gives Reich's new Double Sextet / 2x5 album a perfect four stars in an article that looks at music chosen for the Pulitzer and finds that "recent juries have rewarded some terrific pieces worthy of the acclaim."
