While we can't go out to take in great live music, here are some events taking place online to enjoy while staying home this weekend—a long Memorial Day weekend in the US: Joshua Redman and Tigran Hamasyan perform in the free online Tokyo Jazz Festival Saturday and Sunday; Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi lead a live home concert to benefit Gather New Haven Friday; Lake Street Dive's 2018 concert at The Anthem in DC premieres on Nugs Friday; Lianne La Havas is on BBC Two's Later... With Jools Holland from home Friday night.

Armenian composer and pianist Tigran Hamasyan gave a Facebook Live concert on the official Armenian government Facebook page from his home in Los Angeles today. The event is part of a twice-weekly concert series initiated by the government "to make the daily lives of self-isolated and isolated citizens more interesting," according to Armenian Public Radio. Tigran Hamasyan launches an eight-city US tour in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday. The tour, featuring music from his latest releases, For Gyumri and An Ancient Observer, continues with shows in Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Fresno, and San Francisco, culminating in New York City on October 24.

The Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA (CAP UCLA) has announced its 2018–19 season, and among the artists performing this season, at Royce Hall or the Theatre at Ace Hotel, are Emmylou Harris, Kronos Quartet, Pat Metheny, Tigran Hamasyan, Nico Muhly, and Thomas Bartlett. Subscriptions are on sale now; individual tickets go on sale July 16.

The ECHO Jazz 2018 Award nominations have been announced by the German Recording Academy, including for Chris Thile, Brad Mehldau, and Tigran Hamasyan. Thile and Mehldau are nominated for their duo debut together, Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau—Thile in the Special Instruments category, Mehldau in Piano International—and Hamasyan is up for Piano International for his album An Ancient Observer.

Pianist/composer Tigran Hamasyan's five-song EP For Gyumri, his third recording on Nonesuch Records, is now available. "I believe that our childhood experience shapes who we become when we grow into adulthood," says Hamasyan. "For Gyumri is an ode to my birthplace, the town that nourished my childhood world with great experiences and made me who I am." He begins a tour in Vancouver tonight, followed by stops in Portland, Chicago, and NYC in the coming weeks.

Pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan's third Nonesuch recording, For Gyumri, is due February 16, 2018. A companion to 2017’s An Ancient Observer, For Gyumri includes five additional songs. Hamasyan says: "These songs are musical observations about the world we live in now, and the weight of history we carry with us." He will tour this winter/spring. Tigran Hamasyan has shared the music video for "Leninagone," a song from his album An Ancient Observer. He dedicates the song and video to the children who survived the devastating Armenian earthquake that hit his home town of Gyumri (Soviet name: Leninakan) on December 7, 1988, twenty-nine years ago. "I come from the generation of children whose lives were directly affected by this tragic event," says Hamasyan. "The video portrays the struggle and the hope of all the generations that lived through this apocalyptic time."

Tigran Hamasyan launches a European tour, with music from his new album, An Ancient Observer, in Athens, Greece, on Saturday, making stops in France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Armenia. Tigran Hamasyan has shared a video giving a behind-the-scenes look in the studio during the recording of his new album, An Ancient Observer. The album was produced by Hamasyan and recorded by Antoine Gaillet at Studio de Meudon in Meudon, France, in June 2016. The video was made by Armen Catanasyan. You can watch it here.

Tigran Hamasyan has unveiled the music video for "Markos and Markos," a song from his new album, An Ancient Observer. The screenplay, direction, and animation for the video are by Naira Muradyan, inspired by Zahrad's poem "Marc and Marc." You can watch it here.
