On May 22, Nonesuch releases I Still Play, an album of eleven new solo piano compositions by artists who have recorded for Nonesuch Records, written in honor of the label’s longtime President Bob Hurwitz as he became Chairman Emeritus in 2017. The album features works by John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Timo Andres, Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, Brad Mehldau, Steve Reich, Pat Metheny, and Randy Newman, performed by Andres, Mehldau, Newman, and Jeremy Denk. The members of the original Joshua Redman Quartet—Redman (saxophone), Brad Mehldau (piano), Christian McBride (bass), and Brian Blade (drums)—reunite with the July 10, 2020, release of RoundAgain, the group’s first recording since 1994’s MoodSwing. The album features seven newly composed songs: three from Redman, two from Mehldau, and one each from McBride and Blade. A live version of Redman’s “Right Back Round Again” may be seen here, in a video directed by Matthew Beighley; the album version is available now. The band tours internationally this summer and fall.

Sam Gendel's Nonesuch debut album, Satin Doll, is out now. On this futuristic homage to historical jazz, three musicians—Gendel on saxophone, Gabe Noel on electric bass, and Philippe Melanson on electronic percussion—engage in simultaneous synchronized sonic construction / deconstruction of jazz standards, including songs by Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Duke Ellington. "A woozy, blissfully twisted album," says the Los Angeles Times. "The avant-garde trailblazer pushes the boat out to glorious extremes," says the Guardian. "A searing new language for sax." Gendel has released a new video for the track "Glide Mode," which you can watch here.

Early James's debut album, Singing for My Supper, is out now on Easy Eye Sound and Nonesuch Records. The album spans hard-charging blues, wistful folk, and ages-old pop crooning, anchored by the singer's voice that oscillates from gravel-gruff shout to a honey-smooth whisper. Early James "dazzles on his luminous debut," says Mojo, "this astonishingly assured album."

Vagabon (aka Lætitia Tamko) has released two alternate versions of songs from her self-titled album: "In A Bind (Strings Version)" and "Wits About You (Saxophone Version)." A video for the former, directed by Maegan Houang, also debuts today and can be seen here. She leads a headline tour then joins Brittany Howard on tour this spring.

The Black Keys will release a new limited-edition, 45-RPM version of their album "Let’s Rock" on Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent record stores, on Saturday, April 18. Pressed on two 180-gram vinyl discs, the Record Store Day edition comes in a deluxe holographic gatefold jacket, individually numbered. The set is limited to 7,500 pieces worldwide. The Magnetic Fields’ Quickies will be released on Nonesuch on May 29, 2020. The five 7" vinyl box set features twenty-eight new short songs by Stephin Merritt, ranging in length from thirteen seconds to two minutes and thirty-five seconds. Sam Phillips's critically acclaimed 2001 Nonesuch debut album, Fan Dance, is now available on vinyl, as a fan-selected title on Run Out Groove. Remastered and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the LP comes in an old-school tip-on style jacket with booklet, limited and individually numbered. The Boston Globe calls it "a stunning work of intimacy and emotional range."

Caroline Shaw’s album Orange, for which Attacca Quartet earned a Grammy Award, is due on vinyl for the first time on July 24, 2020, via New Amsterdam and Nonesuch Records. The two-LP set is pressed on double 180-gram orange vinyl and includes a printed excerpt from the score and is available to pre-order now. "Completely gorgeous in so many ways," exclaims BBC Radio 3. "It hits you everywhere, all at once." "A love letter to the string quartet," says NPR. "[W]hen you hear all the imaginative sounds on Orange, you know you're listening to the voice of a strong composer."

Daughter of Swords (aka Mountain Man's Alexandra Sauser-Monnig) follows up her 2019 debut album, Dawnbreaker, with a new digital single, “Prairie Winter Wasteland,” out now. The Jeff Tweedy–produced track, recorded at his Chicago studio The Loft, “is a reflection on the way our emotional experiences of place are shaped in powerful and mystical ways by the people we’ve know there,” she says. Tweedy, who invited Daughter of Swords on tour with Wilco last year, joins her on a variety of instruments, with his son Spencer on drums and Nick Macri on bass. Daughter of Swords begins a full-band US tour this weekend.

Congratulations to Jeff Parker, whose new album, Suite for Max Brown, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Current Contemporary Jazz Chart and at No. 2 on the Contemporary Jazz Chart in the US. The album was released on January 24 via a newly formed partnership between International Anthem and Nonesuch Records. "It lives at the vanguard of new jazz music," says Pitchfork. The Los Angeles Times calls it "a transcendent set of pieces that occupy a vague terrain lit by jazz, experimental electronic music, instrumental hip-hop and genre-jumping avant-rock." Jeff Parker will tour the US in March, with shows in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Philadelphia, NYC, Miami, and Knoxville's Big Ears Festival.
