Folk Songs, a new album joining Kronos Quartet with Nonesuch Records labelmates Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, Rhiannon Giddens, and Natalie Merchant is out now. The artists on the album first came together to perform these songs, most of which are traditional with contemporary arrangements, when Nonesuch celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 with festivals at the Barbican Centre and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The group later recorded the songs with Doug Petty as the album's producer. You can take a quick look at the project in an album trailer here.
Journal Topics: Album ReleaseArtist NewsWednesday,May 31,2017Nonesuch releases k.d. lang's Ingénue: 25th Anniversary Edition on July 14, 2017 (vinyl August 18), to celebrate the double platinum-selling, Grammy Award–winning album's silver anniversary. This new two-disc set includes remastered versions of the album's original ten tracks along with eight previously unreleased performances from lang's 1993 MTV Unplugged episode, recorded in New York City's Ed Sullivan Theater. You can watch her MTV Unplugged performance of "Constant Craving" here. Additionally, lang marks the anniversary with the Ingénue Redux Tour, which visits Australia and her home country of Canada this summer. Nonesuch Store pre-orders of the album include an exclusive, limited-edition print signed by lang.
Journal Topics: Album ReleaseArtist NewsFriday,May 26,2017Sam Amidon's new album, The Following Mountain, is out now. (Outside the US, the CD will follow on June 2, the vinyl on June 30.) Created with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and Amidon's frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, it represents a new approach for Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. To coincide with the album's release, Amidon has unveiled a video for the album track "Blackbird," which you can watch here. He will play an album release concert at Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 14.

It features the legendary singer and her acoustic backing band performing songs by Bill Monroe, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Stephen Foster, Nanci Griffith, and others. The New York Times declared at the time: "This record is her finest moment."

Produced and recorded by Tucker Martine and Colin Meloy at Martine's studio in Portland, OR, and mostly arranged by Chaney, The Queen of Hearts draws largely on traditional English-Irish-Scottish repertoire to create a transatlantic musical conversation that flirts with psychedelia and folk rock while maintaining its own inimitable identity. The trio begins a nine-city US tour at Boston's Symphony Hall tonight.

The album comprises works by J.S. Bach originally written for keyboard instruments, plus one sonata for viola da gamba. In 2011, Ma, Thile, and Meyer—along with Stuart Duncan—collaborated on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which won two Grammy Awards. The Times of London calls Bach Trios "effervescent" and "irresistible." The trio performs in nine cities across the US beginning April 21.
