Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love, the film documenting the making of Youssou's Grammy-winning album Egypt, opens in Canada today. It had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and is now returning to the country for a theatrical run, with the first stop in Montreal. Fader spoke with Youssou and calls the film "an intimate portrait of the international superstar, one of the most compelling and important figures in the huge slice of culture we call world music."

Philip Glass and the Philip Glass Ensemble are teaming up with the LA Phil and the LA Master Chorale to present an all-Glass program tonight at the Hollywood Bowl, including "Spaceship," from Einstein on the Beach, described by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the most important and groundbreaking American operas in history," and a screening of the film Koyaanisqatsi, set to a new arrangement of Glass's score for the ensemble and orchestra. The Times says: "Glass's film music has helped make him perhaps the best-known classical composer of the last half-century." LA Weekly writes: "His progressions tend to be brilliantly subtle, forming, like gradated layers of color on canvas, some amazing aural paintings."

Voltaic, the multimedia extravaganza in music and video celebrating Björk's two-year world tour following the 2007 release of Volta, is due for release from Nonesuch at the end of the month. Screenings of Voltaic's concert film component are set for cities across the US the week leading up to and around the June 30 release. Today marks the US theatrical debut of the documentary film Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love, an examination of Egypt, N'Dour's 2004 album, which highlights the tolerance central to his practice of Islam. The New York Times enjoys the ample opportunities for audiences "to groove to [N'Dour's] crisp, soaring, polyrhythmic music." The Daily News says its director has "given fans a gift in her performance-heavy documentary" and "an enlightening portrait" to newcomers. The director tells Metro: "Through his music, Youssou brings together audiences of many cultures and many faiths. He shows us that each individual has the power to affect change.”

Björk’s Voltaic: The Volta Tour, a concert film featuring stops on her visually dazzling Volta tour in Paris and Reykjavik, will be screened across the US this June and July. There are more than 15 screenings already scheduled, all to coincide with the release of the very special DVD/CD/LP recording Voltaic, due out in the US on Nonesuch on June 30. Youssou N'Dour kicks off the Muslim Voices: Arts & Ideas festival in a sold-out concert with his Super Étoile band at BAM on Friday night. The following night, Youssou and the band return to BAM for the NY premiere of the documentary Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love and a post-screening performance. The Village Voice describes Youssou's band as "astonishing" and Egypt, the album at the center of the film, as "a masterful expression of personal faith embellished with Cairean strings and, of course, the slippery Wolof beats that underlie N'Dour's complexly ecstatic mbalax sound."

Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love premieres at BAM's Muslim Voices festival in June. "He lives so successfully by his convictions, and shows us a very different Islam than what we see in the media," the film's director tells New York. "And his voice is extraordinary. If you watch his band Super Etoile perform, you’ll follow them to the edge of the earth." Robert Cole, who is retiring from Cal Performances after 20-plus years at its helm, says: "Of the artists we've had relationships with, certainly Youssou N'Dour is one of the greatest." At a recent UN-led World Malaria Day event, N'Dour and Malaria No More launched a campaign to encourage the use of mosquito nets in Senegal and help prevent the spread of the disease.

Wilco helped mark national Record Store Day this past Saturday with the limited release of their new concert DVD, Ashes of American Flags, through independent music retailers and on nonesuch.com. Fans in Knoxville got to celebrate up-close with Wilco as the band signed copies of the DVD at the local store The Disc Exchange, video coverage of which was posted online by the Knoxville News. Jeff Tweedy spoke with Spin about Wilco's forthcoming studio album, due out in late spring, described as "a mix of pastoral Americana rock (think 2007's Sky Blue Sky) and experimental studio sounds (2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)."

Ashes of American Flags, the new Wilco concert film directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, makes its New York debut tonight in a special screening at the IFC Center. It's part of Movie Night with Fred Armisen; the SNL cast member will also discuss the film with its directors. Wilco kicks off an extensive US tour tomorrow night in the first of two sold-out shows at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, after throwing out the first ball at the Brewers game tonight.

Ashes of American Flags, the new film by Christoph Green and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty documenting the live Wilco concert experience, is due out on DVD in the Nonesuch Store on Saturday, April 18, and will be screened at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado, tonight. "The members of Wilco are road dogs," says the Colorado Daily, an idea brought to life in the film, which sees them playing "playing blazing, sweaty sets at historic concert halls ... The movie’s concert scenes show the members of Wilco celebrating every stage moment, while the audiences are mesmerized with every moment of the performances."

Ashes of American Flags, the film presenting Wilco live in concert during their 2008 tour, is due out in the Nonesuch Store and in limited release on April 18, and is now available for pre-order. Culled from concerts in Tulsa, New Orleans, Mobile, Nashville, and DC, the film, produced and directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, captures the energy, poignancy, and musicality of a Wilco concert and tour. Orders placed in the Nonesuch Store before April 28, the date of the film's wide release, include a free video download of the band's live performance of "Monday" from the film, available beginning the 18th. The winner for Best Cinematography at the Big Sky Film Festival, the film has been selected to play at a number of upcoming film festivals and special screenings to coincide with its DVD release.
