The new Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis has landed on a number of lists of the Best Movies of 2013, including those of The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, whose A.O. Scott calls this "a year of superabundant quality" in film and places Inside Llewyn Davis at No. 1. "The musical performances—especially from Oscar Isaac, who plays the title character—are hauntingly lovely," he writes. Slate says: "Inside Llewyn Davis is the best film ever made about the folk revival—and one of the best ever made about music, period." 

The new Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis has been named one of the Top 10 Films of the Year by the American Film Institute and is nominated for the LA Film Critics Award for Best Music Score. Inside Llewyn Davis, the new film from Joel and Ethan Coen, opens in select theaters in New York City and Los Angeles today. The film, which has already been met with great critical acclaim, continues to earn accolades. Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan calls the Coen brothers' latest "a singular experience, one of their best films." NPR says it "represents not just another in a streak of brilliant films, but the finest blend yet of the duo's sharp, laugh-out-loud wit and sobering insight into the loneliness and absurdity of existence."

Inside Llewyn Davis, the new Coen brothers film set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961, is a New York Times Critics' Pick. The Times' A.O. Scott says Oscar Isaac "plays both Llewyn and the guitar with offhand virtuosity." The Village Voice gives the film five stars, saying it "might be the best Coen brothers movie yet," and calls Isaac's voice "luminous as the moon."

The film captures the 2011 NYC concerts honoring McGarrigle, with performances from Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Kate's sister Anna, and friends like Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, and Antony. Nonesuch Records released a two-CD set with highlights from the NYC tribute concerts and those held in London and Toronto after McGarrigle died of sarcoma; proceeds from the album benefit the Kate McGarrigle Foundation for sarcoma research.

The life and music of Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle will be celebrated in a number of special events held in her hometown of Montreal this week. The Outremont neighborhood where McGarrigle lived will inaugurate Place Kate-McGarrigle in her honor Wednesday afternoon. Later that evening, the feature documentary capturing the 2011 NYC McGarrigle tribute concerts will be screened at the Théâtre Outremont, where, on Thursday, Kate's children, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, and her sisters Anna and Jane will host two tribute concerts with special guests to benefit the Kate McGarrigle Foundation for sarcoma research.

Chris Thile—whose new album with Punch Brothers, Who's Feeling Young Now?, is due out in two weeks—is playing at Boston's House of Blues tonight with his fellow Goat Rodeo Sessions players: Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Edgar Meyer. Fans across the US will have a chance to catch all of the string-virtuoso magic on the big screen as the concert is broadcast live to movie theaters in all 50 states. Thile will join his fellow Punch Brothers on their US tour in February.

Norwegian Wood, director Tran Anh Hung’s film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s bestselling novel, featuring a "hypnotic" (Wired) score by guitarist/composer Jonny Greenwood, makes its US theatrical debut today, with showings in New York City and Washington, DC.
