Gabriel Kahane stopped by WNYC Studios as the guest on New Sounds' Soundcheck. He spoke with host John Schaefer about his new album, Book of Travelers, and performed three songs from it: "November," "Baltimore," and "Little Love." Composer, pianist, and singer Gabriel Kahane's Nonesuch Records debut album, Book of Travelers, is out now. It comprises his musical travelogue about the looping railway journey across the US he embarked upon the day after the 2016 election. He left behind his cell phone and other internet-connected devices, spending the next two weeks with dozens of strangers whose stories are woven into the cycle. "[An] articulate, musically far-reaching travelogue," says Uncut. "Exquisitely crafted songs … Musically fascinating and hauntingly empathetic." Kahane begins a tour on September 7, when the album is out on vinyl.

David Byrne and Punch Brothers take their tours to Southern California this weekend: Byrne's American Utopia is in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, and Punch Brothers' All Ashore is in Los Angeles and San Diego. Across the country, Timo Andres gives a two-piano concert with David Kaplan at the Ravinia Festival outside Chicago.

Mandy Patinkin, or rather an animated version of the singer and actor, is featured on the latest episode of The Birds and The BS, "the kids show for adults," hosted by Jordan Roth. Thomas Bartlett and Nico Muhly's album Peter Pears: Balinese Ceremonial Music, featuring nine songs they wrote plus three gamelan transcriptions by ethnomusicologist Colin McPhee, was released on Nonesuch in May. Here, the writer Hilton Als shares the story behind the album and his thoughts on it.

Thomas Bartlett and Nico Muhly's Peter Pears: Ceremonial Music Remixes is out now on Nonesuch. It includes reimagined versions of two tracks from their album Peter Pears: Balinese Ceremonial Music: "Balthasar" remixed by E*vax (of Ratatat) and "Eusebius" remixed by Kid Koala. ​Drowned in Sound called the album "exceptional ... simultaneously tense and light, dramatic and calming, an originality which few albums can fully lay claim to."

Gabriel Kahane has released a new song from his forthcoming Nonesuch debut album, Book of Travelers, called "Little Love," and a new video here. The song is available to download now with pre-orders of Book of Travelers along with three other recently released album tracks. Lake Street Dive stopped by Songkick Live to perform several songs from their new album, Free Yourself Up, and earlier fan favorites, and to answer fans' questions. Olivia Chaney closes out her US summer tour in Los Angeles tonight. She performs songs from her new album, Shelter, as she did at Hoxton Hall in London back in June when the album was released. Rhiannon Giddens's program as a performer at and guest curator of the 2018 North Carolina Folk Festival has been announced. The free event takes place in her hometown of Greensboro, September 7–9. Giddens's program includes a performance and discussion with public school students; an evening of jazz, spoken word, and tap dance; a symposium and a workshop on banjo cultures and traditions; a performance on the roots of American dance; a concert of songs from Giddens's Nonesuch albums; and more.

David Byrne's 1986 film True Stories will receive its Blu-Ray and DVD via the Criterion Collection on November 20, 2018. The complete film soundtrack will also be released for the first time on Nonesuch this fall; details to come. Byrne was inspired by tabloid headlines to make True Stories, his sole foray into feature film directing, an ode to the extraordinariness of ordinary American life and a distillation of what was in his own idiosyncratic mind. He uses his songs to stitch together pop iconography, voodoo rituals, and a singular variety show-all in the service of uncovering the rich mysteries that lurk under the surface of everyday experience.
