Carolina Chocolate Drops and Punch Brothers come together for a double bill at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, Scotland. The label mates perform at O2 ABC tonight.

From there, Punch Brothers head back to London, where they wowed audiences and critics alike earlier this week with a headlining show at Bush Hall, which the Guardian described as an "exciting, wildly original set" and the Times called "brilliant, audacious, original and, above all, entertaining." (Read a re-cap in yesterday's Nonesuch Journal here.) The band plays its final supporting set with Amos Lee at O2 Shepherds Bush Empire Saturday night, after several successful gigs with Lee in Amsterdam and Paris earlier this week.

Carolina Chocolate Drops head back to London as well for a performance at Cecil Sharp House on Monday. While in London earlier this week, the band made the rounds at the BBC, appearing on BBC Radio 3's In Tune and Radio 4's Front Row.

Each band has a new album out on Nonesuch next month, available to pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store.

As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, Robert Wilson and Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach returns for the first time in 20 years with the launch of a major international tour, starting with preview performances at the Power Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. These mark the first North American presentations ever held outside of New York City. "It's only January, but the classical music event of the year is already upon us," exclaims the Detroit Free Press. "Glass and Wilson strip down the fundamentals of movement, image, text and music to essentials and then elevate their essence to operatic grandeur ... It's hard to overestimate the impact of Einstein on American music, art and culture."

---

Emmylou Harris will be honored by the Grand Ole Opry on the occasion of her 20th anniversary as an Opry member this Saturday at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Her 20-year milestone will be celebrated with performances by the honoree, Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller, Shawn Colvin (making her Opry debut), and more.

---

Kronos Quartet is at the Barbican in London this weekend to launch a week-long residency entitled Awakenings. The Guardian calls it "voraciously ambitious in its musical range" and says: "Kronos have achieved more in getting the string quartet as a medium, and contemporary music as a creative force, into the global popular consciousness than pretty well any other ensemble."

The residency begins tomorrow with two quartet master classes with Junior Guildhall musicians. It continues on Sunday with Kronos Lab, a three-day workshop in which four emerging quartets are given the chance to explore contemporary repertoire with the members of Kronos Quartet. There will also be discussions around the rehearsal process, the art of collaboration, and building audiences.

---

The Low Anthem continues its North American tour supporting City and Colour with two shows in Canada this weekend, both in British Columbia to be precise: at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre tonight and Kelowna Community Theatre on Saturday.

---

Pat Metheny kicks off a week-long residency at the Blue Note in Tokyo with bassist Larry Grenadier tonight. The Tokyo dates follows the duo's performances at the Blue Note in Nagoya earlier this week.

---

Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau are in Australia for a brief duo tour, which kicked off with a concert at the Concourse Chatswood in Sydney last night and continues through the weekend. They perform one more night in Sydney tonight, at City Recital Hall Angel Place, and head south for a show at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Saturday. The two Sydney shows are part of the 2012 Sydney Festival.

American Railroad, the new album from the Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens, is out now. It is the culmination of four years of research, collaboration, and music-making, having brought Silkroad artists all across the US to uncover and uplift stories of those who built the transcontinental railroad and connecting railways across North America. "The result is a tapestry of stories, traditions, and music that have shaped our multifaceted cultural identity, and that must be heard and recognized," Giddens says. Also out now are a performance video of the track "Mahk Jchi" and the first episode of the American Railroad podcast series. The US fall tour continues to November 23.
