Composer/singer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane releases Magnificent Bird on March 25. On the album, Kahane chronicles the final month of a year spent off the internet, reveling in the tension between quiet, domestic concerns, and the roiling chaos of a nation and planet in crisis. “Sit Shiva,” the album’s first single, out now, finds Kahane skirting the rules of his digital hiatus in order to mourn, online, the death of his maternal grandmother; in typical fashion, he mines not just pathos, but humor and grace amidst his family’s grief. Composer, pianist, and singer Gabriel Kahane is a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters' Charles Ives Fellowship. He is one of eighteen recipients of the Academy's 2021 music awards. Harmony Ives, the widow of Charles Ives, bequeathed to the Academy the royalties of Charles Ives’s music, which has enabled the Academy to give awards in composition since 1970, including two Charles Ives Fellowships of $15,000 each. The awards will be presented virtually at the Academy's Ceremonial on May 19.

Gabriel Kahane begins an eleven-city tour of Europe at the Philharmonie Luxembourg on Saturday. The tour, featuring songs from his album Book of Travelers, continues with stops throughout France, Germany, Netherlands, and Finland, culminating at Konservatoriets Koncertsal in Copenhagen on February 25.

Gabriel Kahane's 2018 Nonesuch Records debut album, Book of Travelers, is out now available on limited-edition, translucent orange vinyl. "Exquisitely crafted songs," says Uncut. "Musically fascinating and hauntingly empathetic." Gabriel Kahane begins his 2019–20 concert season with a performance of songs from his album Book of Travelers at the Honens Festival in Calgary on Friday. The season ahead brings several concerts featuring music from the album, including an evening with string quartet in Seattle and performances of Pattern of the Rail: Six Orchestral Songs from 'Book of Travelers' with Oregon Symphony, of which he was recently named Creative Chair, and Louisville Orchestra. Kahane's currently scheduled season culminates in a concert with Caroline Shaw and Attacca Quartet at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, in May.

Gabriel Kahane has been appointed to the newly created post of Creative Chair at the Oregon Symphony through the 2021/22 Season. In addition to writing and performing three substantial works over the next three seasons, Kahane will serve as an advisor for contemporary programming on the Classical series. He will produce two new concert series: Open Music, a composer-driven chamber series to be held in smaller Portland venues, and an as yet unnamed indie concert series in which pop artists will collaborate with dynamic composers and orchestrators. 

Lake Street Dive's own Rachael Price was on public radio's Live From Here from St. Louis. She joined host Chris Thile and the band, which included Gabriel Kahane and Punch Brothers' Chris Eldridge, on several songs, including "Lullaby of Broadway," in tribute to Doris Day, and Tom Waits's "Take It With Me." Kahane also performed his song "October 1, 1939 / Port of Hamburg" with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. You can watch all three here.

Gabriel Kahane, now touring Europe with music from his album Book of Travelers, has released two new tracks digitally. "I wrote 'Little Love' as a looping study on guitar and always wanted to release a version that reflected the original concept," he says of the new “ruined lace edition” of that Book of Travelers track. "'Trophy Longhorns' appears as a solo piano tune in the staged version of Book of Travelers," he says of the other new track; "it didn't fit emotionally or aesthetically with the rest of the album, but I thought it should see the light of day."

Brad Mehldau's Finding Gabriel will be released on Nonesuch on May 17, 2019. The album comprises nine thematically related songs by Mehldau and features performances by him on piano, synthesizers, percussion, Fender Rhodes, and vocals. Guest musicians include Ambrose Akinmusire, Sara Caswell, Kurt Elling, Joel Frahm, Mark Guiliana, Gabriel Kahane, Becca Stevens, and others. Gabriel Kahane has brought music from his Nonesuch debut album, Book of Travelers, to Europe on tour. The tour begins with performances of the complete 8980: Book of Travelers work from which the album was drawn in Paris and Lyon this week, followed by concerts in London, Dublin, Glasgow, Genk, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin, and Nantes.

The 2019 Big Ears Festival gets under way today, and as usual, featured among the performers are several Nonesuch artists: Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi, Punch Brothers, Gabriel Kahane, and Mountain Man. Big Ears takes place at venues throughout downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, through Sunday.
