Steve Reich made a rare visit to Australia for a residency at the Sydney Opera House that culminated in an all-Reich concert Sunday night. His Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet was performed "with brilliant edginess" by eighth blackbird, says the Sydney Morning Herald in a four-star review, and with "tight-knit playing and incisive attack," says The Australian. Of Reich's seminal Music for 18 Musicians, the latter paper writes: "Performed by a collective of Australia's finest contemporary music performers, this compelling account captured its exuberance while simultaneously revealing its inventive instrumental colours." On Monday, Reich participated in a conversation and concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Steve Reich joined Bang on a Can All-Stars for the start of the group's 25th anniversary tour and a celebration of the composer's 75th birthday with an all-Reich concert at LA's Walt Disney Concert Hall on Tuesday. "A retrospective of Reich, performed by musicians who live and breathe his music, made attendance at this kind of event one of music's memorable experiences," says the Los Angeles Times. Reich is "as close to a rock star as a composer can get these days." Variety describes the performances of Music for 18 Musicians as "nothing short of transcendent."

Steve Reich's latest Nonesuch release, WTC 9/11, has made NPR Music's list of its ten Favorite Classical Albums of 2011. "WTC 9/11, played by the Kronos Quartet, is one of the most gripping, intense, intelligent, emotionally honest and artistically successful works to come out of the tragedy," exclaims NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas. "But I'd also like to turn attention to the wonderful Mallet Quartet that appears on this album ... [and] possesses a quiet beauty that, almost despite its subtleties, demands to be heard."

Clash magazine talks to the composer about the piece and the very personal story behind it. "Steve Reich has composed one of his greatest works to date," says Clash. Steve Reich was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday. In honor of the composer's 75th birthday, the program examines the work and impact of "arguably the most influential composer of his generation," whose music has "inspired generations of composers whose work can be heard in concert halls, dance clubs, and rock festivals." The composer joined the London Symphony Orchestra in concert at Barbican Hall, to which the Daily Telegraph gives a perfect five stars. Cité de la Musique in Paris continued its Reich birthday festival, Pulsations, with a performance of choreographer Karine Saporta's Notes, now available to watch online.
