Director Tran Anh Hung’s film adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel Norwegian Wood, featuring a score by Jonny Greenwood, will be released in the US in January. There will be a special early screening at the Japan Society next Wednesday, December 14, along with a Q&A with the director and actress Rinko Kikuchi. Nonesuch released guitarist/composer Jonny Greenwood’s instrumental score to director Tran Anh Hung’s film Norwegian Wood earlier this year. An adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s bestselling novel, the film was released in the UK in the spring of 2011 and will be released in the US beginning January 6, 2012. The Metropolitan Opera's premiere production of John Adams's Nixon in China, conducted by the composer and staged by director Peter Sellars in their Met debuts, will be given a free screening in Lincoln Center Plaza in New York City tonight at 7:45 PM as part of the Met's third-annual free Summer HD Festival. Seating for the Met's Summer HD Festival is on a first-come, first-served basis and no tickets are required; more than 3,000 seats will be available.

Stephen Sondheim's Company, as performed by the New York Philharmonic and a star-studded cast including Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Christina Hendricks, Patti LuPone, and Martha Plimpton, will be shown in movie theaters across North America today, with encore screenings to follow. True Grit—Joel and Ethan Coen's 2010 film adaptation of the 1968 Charles Portis novel, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, and Hailee Steinfeld—is out now on Blu-Ray and DVD. For the film's soundtrack, available on Nonesuch, composer Carter Burwell looked to 19th-century hymns for inspiration. The Los Angeles Times says the score works "equally well for big-screen vistas and solitary contemplation."

Strange Powers, the documentary that offers an intimate portrait of Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields, is now available on DVD. Special features include previously unreleased deleted scenes of the band in the studio, on tour, and backstage; official music videos; the official film trailer; and a commentary track with Merritt and band member Claudia Gonson. The New York Daily News gives the film four stars, calling Merritt "one of the greatest American songwriters to emerge in the last two decades."

The worldwide celebrations of Steve Reich's 75th birth year have come to NYC, starting with tonight's NY premiere screening of the documentary Steve Reich: Phase to Face at the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts; Reich and the film's director will be there. Carnegie Hall presents an all-Reich concert on April 30 featuring Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can, eighth blackbird, So Percusssion, and three NY premieres; enter to win tickets and more. The Metropolitan Opera's premiere production of John Adams's opera Nixon in China continues on Saturday afternoon, with the composer at the podium. Audiences both in and far outside of New York City will be able to watch the performance live in high-definition at their local movie theaters as part of the Met's Live in HD series, beginning at 1 PM ET. The newly reissued, Grammy-winning original cast recording of Nixon in China is available now from Nonesuch.

IMDB has premiered a new film trailer for Howlin' for You, directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, starring a whole host of familiar faces, and featuring music by The Black Keys. "Alexa Wolff, a sexy assassin with a troubled past, unknowingly falls in love with the man who killed her father," writes the site in its description of Howlin' for You. "He is not her first love, though. Two other men came before. But they would not have her. Ride, Rise, Roar, the concert film documenting David Byrne's 2008-09 tour, Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno, receives its UK premiere today in a one-night-only event screening. Byrne will attend the premiere at the Ritzy Picturehouse in Brixton, London, and participate in a live post-screening Q&A that will be simulcast to dozens of cinemas across the UK. True Grit, the new film from Joel and Ethan Coen, has been winning over audiences since its release last month. The New York Times takes a look at the impact this popularity—its having "shocked Hollywood by burning up the box office"—might have at the Academy Awards. That the film score by Carter Burwell is ineligible for Oscar is a "shame," says the Los Angeles Times, "as Burwell’s work on True Grit is some of his grandest to date." It works "equally well for big-screen vistas and solitary contemplation."
