The new documentary feature Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields, receives its North American theatrical release at the Film Forum in New York City tonight; the band and the filmmakers will attend. A new Magnetic Fields exhibition opens at Other Music in Manhattan as well. In the coming months, the film will open theaters in Toronto and in cities across the US, including Los Angeles, Austin, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Dallas, and Seattle.

Sara Watkins will be on the big screen as a guest on A Prairie Home Companion as the show is broadcast live in movie theaters across North America Thursday, October 21. A high-definition video feed of a special Thursday night performance from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, will be sent via satellite to movie theaters live at 7 PM CT. Also on the show will be Old Crow Medicine Show, Joe Ely, and Andra Suchy.

Björk has co-written a new song with Icelandic poet Sjón for the animated Finnish film Moomins and the Comet Chase, based on the Scandinavian children's book series and TV show. The track, titled "The Comet Song," is coming soon to the iTunes US store, with proceeds from track sales going to support UNICEF's efforts to aid children in Pakistan. The new film I Am Love, featuring the music of John Adams, has now opened in movie theaters across the US, with still more to be added in the coming weeks. The Huffington Post says that wonderful as it is, what "was truly powerful was the music used in the film." The Arts Desk calls the soundtrack album "an excellent single CD introduction to one of our greatest modern composers," complete with "impulsive, inventive and melodically rich post-systems gems."

Steve Reich will be a special guest of the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, New York, tonight, for a screening of the documentary Steve Reich, Phase to Face, and the Opening Night of the center's Sounds of Summer series of music documentaries. Reich will be interviewed by WNYC's John Schaefer, who chaired the jury that chose Reich's Double Sextet for the Pulitzer Prize. Nonesuch will release a recording of that piece, paired with 2x5, later this year.

John Adams's music serves as soundtrack for the new film I Am Love. The BBC calls the album "one of those rare soundtracks that merits—and rewards—repeated listening." The Philadelphia Daily News gives the album an A-, citing "John Adams's brilliant score." The San Jose Mercury News, says the "music considerably adds to the grandness and sweep" of the film; the Chicago Tribune includes it among the elements making I Am Love "a film whose texture and atmosphere and fragrances stay with you."

I Am Love, the new film from director Luca Guadagnino, starring Tilda Swinton and featuring the music of John Adams, has opened in New York and Los Angeles. Guadagnino tells the Los Angeles Times: "His music was so powerful and many scenes were written with it in mind." Adams spoke with the Washington Post, which calls the composer "one this country's most distinguished and most talented artists," his music "beautifully crafted, endlessly engaging and has won over audiences throughout the world."

The soundtrack for I Am Love, the new film from director Luca Guadagnino and actress Tilda Swinton, featuring music by John Adams, is out today on Nonesuch, one day before the film's red-carpet premiere gala in New York City. The filmmakers discuss their use of Adams' music in the Wall Street Journal. The Observer notes: "Whether or not you see the film, this soundtrack is a rewarding digest of the Pulitzer-winner's musical styles."

Stephin Merritt is in Seattle this week for screenings of two projects at the Seattle International Film Festival: Strange Powers, the new documentary about him and The Magnetic Fields, which Seattle radio station KEXP calls "exquisite," and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the classic film for which he has written and will perform a new score.

The word is out: The Black Keys tune "Chop and Change" will be featured on the soundtrack for what will undoubtedly be one of this summer's biggest films, Eclipse, the latest in the Twilight saga starring Robert Pattison, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. The album's track listing is being revealed at MySpace one artist at a time, every half hour today until all 15 tracks are revealed.

Strange Powers, the new documentary film on Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields, makes its New York debut tonight with a sold-out screening at The Bell House in Brooklyn. The screening will be preceded by a monologue from band member Claudia Gonson and followed by a Q&A with the film's directors, Kerthy Fix and Gail O'Hara. The film will be shown at the Seattle International Film Festival in June and begins its theatrical run in NYC this fall.

Bill Frisell is in New York City this week to begin a two-week residency at the Village Vanguard. This week's line-up features the Bill Frisell Trio, with Eyvind Kang on violin and Rudy Royston on drums. Next week, Frisell leads his 858 Quartet, with Kang returning on violin, Jenny Scheinman on violin as well, and Hank Roberts joining on cello. Tonight, Portrait of a Man, a new documentary film featuring Frisell's music, receives its international premiere at the Hot Docs film festival in Toronto.
