Singer/songwriter Cécile McLorin Salvant's Nonesuch debut album, Ghost Song, is out now. The New York Times calls it "her most revealing and rewarding album yet." Uncut says she is "one of the most daring and resourceful vocalists in jazz—or any other genre, for that matter." The Arts Desk exclaims: "The treasure trove of marvels that is Ghost Song exceeds all expectations." Nonesuch Store LP and CD orders include an exclusive signed artwork by Salvant while they last. Salvant has a solo art exhibition at Picture Room in Brooklyn opening tonight, heads out on tour in Europe next week, and will play two nights at Jazz at Lincoln Center in May.

Nonesuch Records releases the forty-disc John Adams Collected Works, a box set of recordings spanning more than four decades of the composer’s career with the label, on July 1, 2022. It includes two extensive booklets with new essays and notes by Timo Andres, Julia Bullock, Robert Hurwitz, Nico Muhly, and Jake Wilder-Smith. Nonesuch made its first record with John Adams in 1985; he was signed exclusively to the label that year, and since then the company has released forty-two first recordings and thirty-one all-Adams albums. “John Adams coming to the label was one of the central events in our company’s history,” says Robert Hurwitz, Nonesuch’s longtime President and current Chairman Emeritus. “The recordings were done in real time, mostly within a few months of a piece’s first performance. Every recording was either conducted by John, or made under close supervision of the composer, who was in the control booth for every album—when he wasn’t on the podium.” Collected Works includes thirty-five discs of Nonesuch recordings and five from other labels.

Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra) releases their Nonesuch Records debut album, LIFE ON EARTH, today. “Alynda Segarra’s powerful … album exudes a glorious irreverence," says Pitchfork, naming it this week's Best New Music. "Their self-described 'nature punk' songs are both intimate and immense, and they’ve never sounded more honest or self-possessed … Segarra’s melodies, some so beautiful that they seem to have existed forever, make them stay.” Uncut exclaims: "A major step forward for one of today’s most vital artists. The first great album of 2022." NPR says: "[Segarra] has a voice rooted in history, making music to change the present … the voice of the future." Hurray for the Riff Raff shares the album in an NPR Listening Party today. They tour North America this spring and head to the UK and Europe this summer.

Pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan’s StandArt—his first album of American standards—will be released on April 29. StandArt includes songs from the 1920s through the 1950s, by Richard Rodgers, Charlie Parker, Jerome Kern, and others; it also includes a piece Hamasyan improvised with his bandmates—bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Justin Brown—and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Other special guests include saxophonists Joshua Redman and Mark Turner. StandArt is available to pre-order with an instant download of Hamasyan’s take on Elmo Hope’s “De-Dah,” the video for which can be seen here. Hamasyan embarks on a US tour in June and has upcoming dates in France, Israel, Switzerland, and Spain.

Pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan has released "Ara Resurrected (Dawatile Remix)." The new track, a remix of a song originally released on Hamasyan’s 2020 album, The Call Within, was recorded by Dawatile—producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist David Kiledjian—in France, and co-produced with Hamasyan, with Dawatile adding electronic elements to Hamasyan’s piano playing from the original recording.

Nearly sixty years after they first played together, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, longtime friends and collaborators, reunite with an album of music from two Piedmont blues masters who have inspired them all their lives: GET ON BOARD: THE SONGS OF SONNY TERRY & BROWNIE MCGHEE, out April 22 on Nonesuch Records. With Taj Mahal on vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano and Cooder on vocals, guitar, mandolin, and banjo—joined by Joachim Cooder on drums and bass—the duo recorded eleven songs drawn from recordings and live performances by Terry and McGhee. Composer/singer/songwriter Gabriel Kahane releases Magnificent Bird on March 25. On the album, Kahane chronicles the final month of a year spent off the internet, reveling in the tension between quiet, domestic concerns, and the roiling chaos of a nation and planet in crisis. “Sit Shiva,” the album’s first single, out now, finds Kahane skirting the rules of his digital hiatus in order to mourn, online, the death of his maternal grandmother; in typical fashion, he mines not just pathos, but humor and grace amidst his family’s grief. Acclaimed singer, songwriter, and musician Molly Tuttle will release her Nonesuch Records debut album, Crooked Tree, April 1 with her new bluegrass collective Golden Highway; vinyl follows May 13. You can watch Tuttle and her band perform the title track live here. Recorded live at Nashville’s Oceanway Studios, Crooked Tree was produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and features collaborations with Sierra Hull, Old Crow Medicine Show, Margo Price, Billy Strings, Dan Tyminski and Gillian Welch. The album explores Tuttle’s love of bluegrass, which she discovered though her father, a music teacher and multi-instrumentalist, and her grandfather, a banjo player. Across these thirteen tracks, all of which were written/co-written by Tuttle, she honors the bluegrass tradition while also pushing the genre in new directions. Tuttle and Golden Highway—Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Shelby Means (bass), and Kyle Tuttle (banjo)—launch a US tour tonight.

A remix of Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science” by Arca—the Venezuelan musician, singer, composer, and producer Alejandra Ghersi Rodriguez—is out now Nonesuch Records. Arca produced her reinterpretation of the title track to Laurie Anderson’s landmark 1982 debut album from her home studio in Barcelona; the original recording features Anderson on vocals, OBXa, percussion, and electronics; Roma Baran on glass harmonica; Perry Hoberman on bottles; and David Van Tieghem on RotoToms and timpani, as well as Anderson, Baran, Hoberman on “sticks.” 

Punch Brothers’ album Hell on Church Street is out now on Nonesuch Records. The album is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues. The record features a collection of songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe, and others. An in-the-studio video of the band playing the album track “Pride of Man,” written by Hamilton Camp, may be seen here. Punch Brothers are now touring the US, heading to California this week, followed by stops across the country, including Chicago, New York, and Boston.

Tyondai Braxton releases “Multiplay” on Nonesuch Records today. The new track features Braxton on electronics, and was recorded in his home studio in Bearsville, NY. Following last month’s release of “Dia" / "Phonolydian”—Braxton’s first new music in five years—“Multiplay” is the next in a series of new releases to continue through the year. The first performance of a three-show residency entitled Multiplay, at Public Records in Brooklyn, scheduled for January 12, has been postponed until May 4 and will feature a duo set between Braxton and Cibo Matto founder Yuka C. Honda. The other two shows are scheduled to take place as planned.

Jeff Parker’s solo guitar album Forfolks is now available on vinyl and digitally on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records, with the CD out next week. The album includes interpretations of Thelonious Monk's “Ugly Beauty” and the standard “My Ideal,” plus six original compositions: two earlier tunes, “Four Folks” and “La Jetée,” and four new loop-driven, stratiform works that marry melodic improvisation with electronic textures. As Parker says: “I am trying to create a sonic world for me to wander around in.” Parker is co-headlining a US tour with Steve Gunn this month and next spring and will perform at NYC Winter JazzFest and Big Ears Festival.
