Stephen Sondheim celebrated his 80th birthday in March in a Lincoln Center concert that will be broadcast on PBS this fall. The festivities continue this weekend as Sondheim is the focus of two concerts on the same day, nearly 4,000 miles apart: at the Ravinia Festival Pavilion outside Chicago and at London's Royal Albert Hall for BBC Proms Saturday night. Sondheim is the BBC Radio 3 Composer of the Week.

Performances of the Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music resume on Broadway, with Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch taking on the roles originated in the revival by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury. The San Francisco Chronicle describes the play as "an irresistible waltz through some of Sondheim's most memorably melodic songs" and gives "wild applause" to the cast album featuring Zeta-Jones and Lansbury, calling it "a treasure."

Congratulations to Catherine Zeta-Jones, winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music; she performed the musical's most famous song, "Send in the Clowns," at last night's awards ceremony. Stephen Sondheim and the cast of A Little Night Music, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angela Lansbury, and Alexander Hanson, signed copies of the new cast album in New York City last week for more than 250 lucky fans upon the album's release.
